It wasn't an easy childhood, growing up with a secret that could get you killed. Forcing yourself not to act on instinct, especially when teenage hormones raced through you. A misjudged action could lead to a beheading.

Not that his memories of Ealdor are all bad. Mostly they are filled with laughter. Him and Will as young knights, aged eight, saving the village from invisible dangers, until their mothers called them in.

But those memories hold their own pain, so now, lying beside his sleeping prince, in passion’s warm afterglow, he makes new ones. There will be no sorrow tonight.

Just for a moment, he let go.

Let go as Merlin’s hand slid around the back of his neck and pulled him in.

Let go as he came closer and closer, until the outlines were fuzzy and all he could see were two pools of dark midnight blue and the alluring pout of Merlin’s pink lower lip, that lip that he ached to nip and lick until it was raw.

Let go as those captivating lips brushed against his, as they pressed softly, warm and inviting.

Just for a moment, they were only Arthur and Merlin and nothing else mattered.

Merlin knelt there for a while, shaking, cradling his King’s head in frail arms. Both know this to be the end: of Arthur’s life and Merlin’s reason.

They do not waste what few moments they have with tears, instead they speak of the past and try in vain to cheer the other up with humorous memories and events that brought them closer. Merlin reminds him of his poor hunting attempts.

Arthur smiles and pulls him close, resting his friend’s hand on his barely beating heart and whispers “You did manage to capture something.” A few seconds later, that something stopped.
